You probably don’t think about your water heater a whole lot.
It’s tucked away in the basement or utility room of your Seacoast region home, doing its thing, making sure you have hot showers and clean dishes.
But you should pay attention to it. Your water heater will often give you signs that it needs repairs or needs to be replaced before it fails.
We’ve put together a list of some things you can spot that could mean your water heater may have some trouble.
Did you know that heating water accounts for around 20 percent of your home’s energy costs? If you see an increase in your energy bills and there’s no explanation for it, your water heater may be the culprit. Contact P. Gagnon & Son and we’ll make a service call.
When water heaters haven’t been maintained as they should, sediment often builds up in the bottom of the tank. When that happens, there are banging and/or rumbling noises made when water is being heated. That’s why you need to drain your water heater tank regularly to get rid of those sediments. It’s something our service technicians do during routine maintenance. But if it’s been several years since the tank has been drained of sediment, it’s probably time for a new water heater.
If the hot water coming out of your water heater is rusty, that may mean the water heater is corroding from the inside. If so, leaks or water heater failure may not be far behind. Contact P. Gagnon & Son so we can come check it out.
The average life expectancy of a water heater is 10 to 12 years. How old is your water heater? If you don’t know, check out this video to help you find out. If it’s in that age range (or older), it’s time to plan upgrading before you’re forced into it with a water heater failure.
The common image of a water heater leak is a flood of water. That’s not always the case. Often, it’s just small drips and trickles that leave the floor around your water heater wet or damp. See that? Get in touch with P. Gagnon & Son so we can determine what’s going on.
