Exploring Rye, NH
In 1623, European settlers made a permanent community at Odiorne Point. Over time, it became known as Sandy Beach, but in 1726, it was designated the Parish of Rye. In 1785, Rye was incorporated as a town.
Rye has the longest coastline of any coastal New Hampshire town, and nearly two-thirds of its 35.5 square miles is wetland or march.
Off the coast of Rye are the Isles of Shoals, nine islands that were discovered in the early 17th century. The Isles are subject to many legends, including that the infamous pirate Blackbeard buried treasure there. These islands were also the site of Victorian-era resorts.
