A New Biofuel Made Right Here in Maine!

The cleaner, greener future of heating oil

new biofuel refinery maineRenewable home energy resources go beyond solar and wind. Biofuels are a key player in America’s energy future as they provide sustainability, lower emissions, better efficiency, and stronger energy security.

Maine is at the forefront of the growth of biofuels, and Mainers will benefit with jobs as well as cleaner-burning home heating fuel like the Bioheat® fuel sometimes delivered by P. Gagnon & Son.

Bangor-based Biofine Developments Northeast Inc. has reached a tentative agreement to locate its new multiphase biofuels refinery at a former mill site in Lincoln. The facility is expected to be operational in 2023 and is predicted to add 200 full-time jobs.

While the biofuels in Bioheat are often made from plant oils, recycled restaurant cooking oils, and algae, Biofine will using woody fiber waste from nearby lumber and paper mills to make ethyl levulinate, which the company has branded EL 100. Biofine says that EL 100 produces zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Biofine will partner with Sprague Resources LP of Portsmouth, which is one of the largest distributors of Bioheat in the area.

Not only does this benefit the local economy and environment, it provides another opportunity for the heating oil industry to reach its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.

Benefits of Bioheat

Adding Bioheat to our premium fuel, which also includes our UltraGuard additive, is better for the environment, your home, and your wallet.

Because Bioheat is a blend of biofuels and ultra-low sulfur heating oil, greenhouse gas emissions are dramatically reduced.

Bioheat leaves almost no deposits on your heating system’s parts, so it keeps your equipment functioning efficiently. You could save on your energy costs while keeping your home warm and comfortable.

That efficiency also lowers the amount of wear and tear on your equipment. Your furnace or boiler can operate more efficiently, resulting in lower energy costs. Because of less wear, you’ll probably have fewer breakdowns, require fewer repairs, and the heating system might last longer!

There’s another bonus to Bioheat: You get all of this without having to replace or modify your existing furnace or boiler.
