What To Do If You Lose Heat In Your Home

These Troubleshoots Can Save You Time And Money!

no heat maineThere’s nothing like coming home to a warm, comfortable house this time of year.

But if you come home and there’s no heat, that’s an unpleasant feeling. Now you’re still cold, you have to worry about your pipes freezing and bursting. You are also dreading possible repair bills for your furnace or boiler.

Take a deep breath. First of all, P. Gagnon & Son offers 24/7 emergency no-heat service.

Second, you may be able to solve the problem yourself and get your heat back on without a service call!

The first thing to do is check your thermostat. Is it set at least 5 degrees warmer than the current temperature in your home? Is it set to “HEAT”? If so, move on to the next troubleshoot.

Is the power switch for your heating system set to “ON”? If it’s not, turn it on and see what happens. If nothing happens, go to the next step.

Check your heating oil or propane supply. Is your tank more than ⅛ full? If it is, move on to the next step. If it isn’t, turn off your heating system right away and call us for an emergency fuel delivery.

Go to your circuit breaker box. Was the circuit for your heating system tripped? If it was, turn it back on and see what happens. If nothing happens, on to the next troubleshoot.

If you have a furnace, the problem may be a clogged air filter. Turn your heating system off before you check the air filter. If it’s dirty, replace it. Now is a good time to set a reminder on your calendar to check it every month and change as needed. If this doesn’t work, move on to the final step.

If you have a steam boiler (as opposed to a hot water boiler), check the water gauge. If it’s less than half full, call us. If it is more than half full, or you have a hot water boiler, go to the final step.

Whether you have a furnace or a boiler, press and hold the reset button for three seconds. If that doesn’t work, DO NOT try it again. Multiple reset attempts can damage your heating system. Call us right away.

If you have a no-heat emergency and these troubleshoots don’t work, call us any time of day or night at 207-853-8101. Our phones are staffed 24/7 so you’ll always get a person and not a recording!
