“I have used the services of P. Gagnon & Son for many years, and I have always been extraordinarily pleased. They have taken care of my oil delivery and my furnace maintenance without fail. Recently, they installed the propane fuel for my standby generator, and that service was absolutely excellent. These people are the best!” – Linda K.

York: Coastal charm and more!

York is the second-oldest town in Maine (Kittery is the oldest). It was settled by Europeans in 1624. It underwent a few name changes in the early years. It was first called Agamenticus, after the Abenaki term for the York River. It was later called Bristol, then Gorgeana (after Sir Ferdinando Gorges), before finally being named York in 1652.

York was a major trading center servicing the West Indies in the 18th century. Our Founding Father John Hancock was a merchant in York.

The trading industry was hobbled after President Thomas Jefferson imposed the Embargo Act of 1807. York’s fortunes changed again after the Civil War, when it became a fashionable vacation destination for Gilded Age families, thanks to its sea breezes and large sandy beaches. It remains a popular vacation spot today.

Notable York natives and residents include:

  • Duncan Robinson, of the NBA
  • Tim Janis, a composer
  • Christopher Cassidy, an astronaut and Navy SEAL
  • Mandy Cronin, an ice hockey executive and former player
