Durham: A college town with a small-town vibe
The land which is now Durham was an ideal location for indigenous peoples and the European settlers who followed. Great Bay and the mouth of the Oyster River provided an ample supply of shellfish. Nearby meadows allowed for crops, while the woods to the north allowed for hunting and trapping. The river and sea access made trade easier.
English settlers established a community here in 1623, and what was called Oyster River Parish was incorporated in 1732 and named Durham. In the mid-18th century, Benjamin Thompson, the descendant of an original settler, bequeathed his estate for the establishment of an agricultural school. The New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was founded in 1866 in Hanover, and moved to Durham in 1923, where it became the University of New Hampshire.
Durham today offers one of the best public school systems in the state, along with a walkable downtown, skiing and hiking, easy access to the coast, and arts and cultural experiences at UNH.
